Dear Parishioners

When to remove the Crib from the church?

The answer is on February 2nd, the feast of THE PRESENTATION OF THE LORD also known as ‘Candlemas’ Before the blessing of candles on this day, the priest says the following:

‘Dear brothers and sisters, forty days have passed since we celebrated the joyful feast of the Nativity of the Lord. Today is the blessed day when Jesus was presented in the Temple by Mary and Joseph…’ The priest then prays ‘O God, source and origin of all light, who on this day showed to the just man Simeon the Light for revelation to the Gentiles, we humbly ask that, in answer to your people’s prayers, you sanctify with your blessing these candles, which we are eager to carry in praise of your name, so that, treading the path of virtue, we may reach that light which never fails.’

Christmas celebrates the birth of Jesus and the light which came into the world on his birthday. When Mary and Joseph took Jesus to the temple, Simeon ‘saw the light’ and exclaimed ‘ eyes have seen the salvation which you have prepared for all the nations to see, a light to enlighten the pagans and the glory of your people Israel’. This is such an important declaration we say or sing this text every night in night prayer.

On February 2nd, the light of the world, Jesus Christ is thus symbolised by the Christ child in the crib and the candles which are blessed for use in the church on this feast.

We will be having a sung mass on this great feast on SATURDAY 2ND FEBRUARY at 10.00 a.m. with blessing of candles. If you have any new candles you will be using in prayer at home, please bring them to mass on this day to be blessed and make your last visit to the crib in our Lady Chapel. St. John Paul II would make his last visit to the crib in St. Peter's Square after celebrating the evening Mass on February 2nd. . After this visit the Nativity scene was dismantled. We will be doing the same.

In unity,

Fr Jonathon
