First Reading: (Wis. 1:13-15;2:23-24). Emphasises that God destined man for everlasting life and made him in his own image; it was sin that destroyed this plan and brought suffering and death.

Second Reading: (2 Cor. 8:7.9.13-15) Paul tells the Corinthians and us that we who have received so much ought to give to those who do not have nearly as much. In this we have our best example in Christ’s own generosity.

Responsorial Psalm: (Ps. 29) I will praise you Lord, you have rescued me.

The Gospel: (Mark 5:21-43) Presents Jesus as having power over death and asks us to put fear aside and have faith in him. Faith alone permits the power of Jesus to flow in our lives.

Peter's Pence (or Denarii Sancti Petri
and "Alms of St Peter")

By reason of the bond of unity and charity, the bishops of the Church with their people, joined together to produce those means which the Holy Father and the Apostolic See need to exercise works of mercy and charity and its service of the Universal Church. The faithful’s offerings to the Holy Father are destined to church needs, humanitarian initiatives and social promotion projects, as well as to the support of the Holy See. The Pope, being Pastor of the whole Church, is attentive to the material needs of poor diocese, religious institutions and faithful in grave difficulties: the poor’ children, the elderly, those marginalised and the victims of war and natural disasters. Concrete aid is thus made available to bishops or diocese in need, to catholic education, assistance, to refugees and immigrants etc. So that we as a parish can help, the wall safe near the entrance to the sacristy which at the moment is marked ‘Flowers’ will be re-named “Peter’s Pence” from now until the end of Sept 2018. Thanks for your generous support.

A Programme of Healing

Grief to Grace is a specialised 5-day programme of spiritual and psychological healing for anyone who has suffered sexual, physical, emotional or spiritual abuse in childhood, adolescence or adulthood, including those who are the victims of rape, incest or abuse by a member of the clergy. We call it a retreat because for five days you will be in a safe, protected environment and because the process is grounded in the Scriptures, the Sacraments and prayer, enabling you to open your deepest wounds to the healing power of Christ the Divine Physician. However, this retreat programme has also been expertly and lovingly designed to make a path for that healing using therapeutic tools from the most up-to-date psychology and treatment of trauma. The human science of psychology is integrated into a Christian view of the person whose meaning and dignity is deeper than the psyche. Body, mind and spirit are all engaged and cared for. By Joseph Mary Plunkett

I see his blood upon the rose
And in the stars the glory of his eyes,
His body gleams amid the eternal snows,
His tears fall from the skies.

I see his face i every flower;
The thunder and the singing of the birds
Are but his voice - and carven by his power
Rocks are his written words.

All pathways by his feet are worn,
His strong heart stirs the ever-beating sea,
His crown of thorns is twined with every thorn
His cross is every tree.
