First Reading: (Is. 49:1-6). John the Baptist was the servant who came to show the nations the path of the Lord.

Second Reading: (Acts 13:22-26). In his humility, John faithfully proclaimed the news that Christ was to come after him, even if he was unfit to undo the strap of his sandal.

Responsorial Psalm: (Ps. 138) I thank you for the wonder of my being.

The Gospel: (Luke 1:57-66.80). John is born, the child of aged parents, and his father’s speech is restored so that he can praise God.

John the Baptist

The birthday of John the Baptist is one of the oldest Christian feasts. Today we celebrate the cousin of Jesus, Elizabeth’s son, the prophet who baptised Jesus in the Jordan, the forerunner, specially chosen by God to be the herald of the Saviour and to prepare the people for his coming.

Requiem Mass for the late Mrs Anne Hawkins Monday 2nd July at 11am followed by committal at Falconwood Crematorium at 1pm.

Reverence in Church

Fr John wonders if there is a danger that we might be losing it a bit. He asks ‘are conversations becoming frequent before Mass?’ Perhaps the following might be a helpful guide:

Before Mass; speak to God.
During Mass; Allow God to speak to you.
After Mass; Speak to one another.

Gift Aid Scheme 2018/19

Gift-aid Envelopes for the financial year 2018/19 will be distributed at all Masses this weekend. If you are currently a member of the scheme please kindly collect your box. The Gift Aid Organiser for the Parish is Prabath Fernando. If you would like to know more about the scheme and are interested in joining please let Prabath or one of the people handing out the boxes at the separate Masses know so that your enquiry can be followed up as soon as possible. For those who pay tax making your weekly offering through the gift aid scheme is a very beneficial way for the Church and the Parish receives an additional 25 pence from the Government for each £1 you donate.

A Programme of Healing

Grief to Grace is a specialised 5-day programme of spiritual and psychological healing for anyone who has suffered sexual, physical, emotional or spiritual abuse in childhood, adolescence or adulthood, including those who are the victims of rape, incest or abuse by a member of the clergy. We call it a retreat because for five days you will be in a safe, protected environment and because the process is grounded in the Scriptures, the Sacraments and prayer, enabling you to open your deepest wounds to the healing power of Christ the Divine Physician. However, this retreat programme has also been expertly and lovingly designed to make a path for that healing using therapeutic tools from the most up-to-date psychology and treatment of trauma. The human science of psychology is integrated into a Christian view of the person whose meaning and dignity is deeper than the psyche. Body, mind and spirit are all engaged and cared for. General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR)

As you will no doubt know the above ‘kicked in’ on May 25th. It affects the way in which personal data may or may not be stored, managed and protected. For example, we may not ask for prayers for a sick person without first having got the consent of the person in question or the consent from an authorised person. Consent is also needed with regard to putting in the newsletter information that Mass or prayers are being offered for the wellbeing of a named person. Consent is not required for people already on our sick list and if Mass or prayers are offered for somebody who has died, the name of the person can be published. Fr. John is considering how he can best give you the opportunity to express your consent if you wish to give your consent. Further clarification to come.
