First Holy Communion

First Reading: (Deut 4:32-34,39-40). In his final sermon, Moses calls on the people to be faithful to the God who has freed them from slavery and to keep his commands.

Second Reading: (Rom 8:14-17). As sons and daughters of God, we are led by the spirit into a life of truth, love, holiness and repentance

Responsorial Psalm: (Ps. 32) Happy the people the Lord has chosen as his own.

The Gospel: (Mt 28:16-20). Jesus sends his disciples out on mission, commanding them to baptise in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

Parish Faith and Culture Day

The general consensus is that it was a great occasion in the life of our parish community. It was a wonderful example of what can happen when people work together each making his/hers contribution whether it be by way of prayer, song, food/drink. Dance, sharing talents, time and culture or simply the warmth of the presence. The Good Lord blessed us with beautiful weather and I am sure in many other ways also. So A BIG, BIG THANK YOU to everyone.

Parish Census - Compiling Has Started

Many thanks to Mary Hewett and Janette Cousins and the army of helps who have delivered 11000 envelopes throughout the Parish. Such a mammoth task couldn’t have been done without you. If you live outside the Parish boundary but you consider St Thomas More your parish, then please take a form with you and return it to the presbytery on completion as soon as possible by post or by hand. Thank you.

The Trinity

This mystery of God is beyond us. Our human language is inadequate to express the mystery, as TS Elliott said: Words strain, crack and sometimes break under the burden.

Catechist’s Course

Our ‘trainee catechists’ will be on Retreat in Aylesford on the 9th June. The title of the Retreat is the Holy Spirit and the Blessed Mary. If any other member of the Parish would like to avail of this opportunity, please let Fr. John or Jacquie know.

Advance Notice

The Lesnes Abbey Procession of the Blessed Sacrament will take place on Sunday afternoon of June 24th at 3pm. Children who have celebrated their First Holy Communion here at St Thomas More will join with First Communicants from other parishes in the Deaneries of Bexley and Greenwich. It has been a very special day since 1970 . It takes place on the site of the ruins of an Augustinian Monastery founded in reparation for the murder of St. Thomas a Beckett in Canterbury Cathedral. It was sacked during the reign of King Henry VIII. Incidentally, the Monks were the first to try curb the flooding of the Thames River. In the woods behind the Ruins, shark’s teeth were discovered in recent times.

Guides

The Guides wish to thank you for your great support in helping to raise £170 for the funds for equipment for their trip to Switzerland next year. They will also be hosting a BEETLE DRIVE on the 21st June 6pm – 8pm in the church hall. This is a fun evening, the rules will be explained on the night. The evening is always lively and there are prizes available along with refreshments and a raffle.

Bexley Deanery Retreat

St John’s Seminary – Wonersh – Can you help?

The Seminary near Guildford (which as been involved in the formation of priests for over 125 years) is looking for some help with the cost of re-decoration and refurbishment of 30 of its bedrooms, which have received little or no upgrading for 40+ years. Many rooms have threadbare or no carpets, and curtains which are close to disintegration. Some of the beds and other furniture started life in the Junior Seminary at mark’s Cross, Sussex which closed in 1970. The Seminary operates on a very tight budget, and there are no funds available for this much needed work which would cost in the region of £2000 per room. If you can help in any way, please send a cheque made payable to St John’s Seminary to: Mgr Gerry Ewing, (Vice-Rector), St John’s Seminary, Wonersh, Guildford Surrey GU5 0QX.
