Silent Adoration 10.30-11.30

First Reading: (Is.61: 1-2,10-11). An identikit for the coming Messiah is outlined in this familiar passage. God’s anointed one will exult for joy in the Lord and the wonders he will work.

Second Reading: (1Thess. 5:16-24). Joy marks this Sunday of Advent. In what might be Paul’s earliest letter he concludes with the assurance that who live and die in Christ will be saved. God will not fail those who have been called.

Responsorial Psalm: (Luke 1:46-50,53-54) My soul rejoices in the Lord

The Gospel: (Jn 1: 6-8. 19-28). John’s Gospel opens with a poetic prologue that presents Jesus as the Word of God made flesh. Who is Jesus? And what does his appearance mean is now answered by the witness of John the Baptist

Gathering in Liverpool 2018

The bishops of England and Wales will hold a National Eucharistic Pilgrimage and Congress in the Echo Arena, Liverpool, 7-9 September, 2018. Eucharistic Congresses are gatherings of clergy, religious and laity which promote an awareness of the central place of the Eucharist in the life and mission of the Church The Congress themes:

1. Eucharist
2. Adoration
3. Scripture
4. Ecclesiology – the Church
5. Formation
6. Music
7. Mission

These 7 themes all linked to the centrality of the Eucharist, provide a very rich reservoir of material for reflection and discussion. They can be adapted by parishes so that the prime focus remains at parish community level. The impact of this Congress needs to be absorbed and consolidated in each of our parishes and schools because that is where it matters to every individual person. Congress Prayer Cards have been sent to each parish and are available at the back of the Church, so please take one and keep this Congress in your prayers.

Archbishop Peter Smith

Each Parish in the Deanery will take it in turn to host a 24 hour Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament in preparation for the Congress. The Adoration begins at 10am on the First Friday of every month and continues until 10am on Saturday morning. The time of ‘watching’ is arranged in hourly slots. St John Fisher, Bexley has hosted the December Adoration. St John Vianney will be hosting the January Adoration; Blackfen are hosting in February and St Thomas More, Bostall Park is hosting on the First Friday of March. Each Parish is requested to help the ‘hosting’ Parish by volunteering to go to that Parish and watch and pray before the Blessed Sacrament at a chosen time slot. The time slots for St John Vianney are available in the Porch. Do please volunteer for a PRAYER SLOT
