First Reading: (Isaiah 35). The vision of Isaiah changes from declaring the certainty of God’s judgement on his people to rejoicing in the hope of God’s salvation, looking beyond the period of chastisement to the time when God would fulfil his gracious purposes to his people in their own land.

Second Reading: (James 5:7-10). At the time of James’ writing the church was expectant of the immanent coming of Jesus, and James encourages his people to be patient as they wait for Christ to return in glory, not to be blaming and judging one another.

The Gospel: (Mt 11:2-11). John had proclaimed the coming of the Messiah as one who would judge the people, but the reports of Jesus’ ministry he was hearing had little to do with judgement.  He sought reassurance that he had not been mistaken in his understanding of who Jesus was.

Responsorial Psalm: Come, Lord, and save us.

General Notices

Welcome to Advent Third Week

For the past two Sunday’s the emphasis has been on the second, the final coming of Jesus Christ. The ‘Parousia’ in theological speak. Then all things will be well all manner of things will be well. Perfection complete, but when will it be? Why not now? Why the delay for so long? Ever since the time of Jesus Christ there has been predictions of the end being neigh, but they turned out to be false, but still, why the delay? We don’t know God has his own timing. As St Peter says in his second letter “There is no difference in the Lord’s sight between one day and a thousand years; to Him the two are the same. The Lord is not slow to do what he has promised, as some think instead he is patient with us because he doesn’t want anyone to be destroyed, but all to come to life” (free translation).

But then, bringing all things, including us to perfection is not a solo project by God. We are his partners, are we furthering the project? Or, are we holding up the project? The truth is we are. Because of our sins, we don’t go with the flow of our lives which is ‘God-ward’. We are born with the seed of God in us. Our lives are the womb in which that seed grows. We are coded for God, programmed for eternal life and fullness. We are an incompleteness searching for completeness. We can’t be other than ‘God-bound’, but from where I now stand, how can I move towards that COMPLETENESS with the whole of creation? See you next week.
