First Reading: (Wis 11:22-12:2). This reading from the Book of Wisdom, shows us how mercy is written into the very fact that we exist: God has created us because he loves us before we even existed, and he saves us by the same love when we need him to rebuild our lives. “Little by little” he guides us to become the person we should be and to trust in God.

Second Reading: (2 Thess 1:11-2:2). Many Christians today look for signs to help them understand the times in which we live, which are often times of confusion and worry. Writing to the Thessalonians, Paul reminds them that the real path to heaven is by the day to day growth in the Christian life, where God is actively helping us to gown in his likeness.

The Gospel: (Lk 19:1-10). We hear a lot this year about the mercy of God, and this Gospel story of Jesus meeting the tax collector Zacchaeus has a special place in that story of mercy.

Responsorial Psalm: I will bless your name for ever, O God my King.

Year of Mercy Banner

It has presently rolled up in the sacristy, but where to display it? The Parish council addressed the issue at the recent meeting. It was noted that the painting hanging in the porch was originally within the church on the back wall. If it was re-positioned there, THE YEAR OF MERCY banner (THE PRODICAL SON) could then be displayed in the porch where the painting now hangs. How this might be best negotiated is under consideration.

Praying for the Others in November

If ‘Purgatory’ is simply purification through fire IN THE ENCOUNTER WITH THE Lord, Judge and Saviour, how can a third person intervene, even if he or she is particularly close to the other? When we ask such a question, we should recall that no man is an island, entire of itself. Our lives are involved with one another, through innumerable interactions they are linked together. No one lives alone. No one sins alone, No one is saved alone. The lives of others continually spill over into mine: in what I think, say, do and achieve.  And conversely, my life spills over into that of others: for better and for worse. So my prayer for another is not something extraneous to that person, something external, not even after death. In the interconnectedness of Being, my gratitude to the other – can play a small part in his purification – It is never too late to touch the heart of anther.

Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI.
