First Reading: (1 Kgs 17:17-24): God responds to the pleas of the prophet and restores the widow’s son to life, and Elijah gave him to his mother.

Second Reading: (Gal 1:11-19): The good news Paul preached is not a human message.

The Gospel: (Lk 7:11-17): Jesus said: ‘Young man, I say to you, arise.’ And he gave him to his mother.

Responsorial Psalm: I will praise you Lord, you have rescued me.

  • Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ: We celebrate the solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ on the Thursday after Trinity Sunday, to draw attention to that Life which the Eucharist gives us. It is a fuller echo of the Most Holy Trinity, in such a way that the Divine Life is shared by our souls through this Sacrament. This is a deepest, innermost mystery and we accept it with all our hearts, with all our interior “ego”... However, there is but one day, and one time, when we desire to give particular external and public expression to this reality. That day is today. It is an expression of love and veneration. Saint Pope John Paul II.
  • One sacred host: As one sacred host, from among the millions of hosts on the Earth, is enough to nourish us with God, so one brother or sister, the one whom God’s will puts next to us, is enough to give us communion with humanity, which is the mystical Jesus. My God, let me be in this world the tangible sacrament of your Love, of your being Love; let me be your arms that press to themselves and consume in love all the loneliness of the world. Chiara Lubich
  • True Joy: Joy, true joy, is contagious; it is impels one forward.... There is no holiness in sadness, there isn’t any!.... When you see a seminarian, a priest, a sister or a novice with a long face, gloomy.... Something has gone wrong! Please: never any sisters, never any priests with faces like picked chilli peppers! Pope Francis.

Year of mercy pilgrimage to aylesford

The meeting on Wednesday was very poorly attended. However, there was progress. Sunday August 14th is a very special day at Aylesford, the Feast of The Assumption of Our Lady is celebrated also it is the annual pilgrimage day of The Society of Our Lady of Lourdes. It is the day on which The Lourdes sick and handicapped group from our parish visits The Shrine. They have invited fellow parishioners, young and old to join them for the Year of Mercy. They will travel by the Bats mini-bus specially adapted for wheelchairs, etc. So anybody accepting their invitation will need to make their own travel arrangements. So why not share cars, as it may not be possible to travel in convoy and a meeting front will be arranged in the Shrine grounds. Please take a picnic lunch to be shared with the group in a designated area so a mini parish get-to-gather at The Shrine  in the Year of Mercy.  How appropriate!

The Tablet Magazine

There are five free copies in the porch, on a four week trial. Please take one before they are all gone. It is a weekly and highly recommended. Maybe you could give it a try for a year after sampling it.

‘The text you read is also reading you’ (Elmar Salmann). A stranger thought, but on reflection, whether it is a biblical text or a poem, encountering a text invites me to enter, to allow myself to be kidnapped. Otherwise I am just skimming it with the surface of my eyes. Quality of attention needs time, courage, and a kind of vulnerability. As in meeting a person at any depth. Or in reading or in prayer. But if I reach a level of presence, little miracles can happen. I am taken out of my small self into an exploration of wonder. I am transformed. The petition of King Lear ‘sweeten my imagination’ is answered. Michael Paul Gallagher SJ.
