Amazing Growth of our "world cconsciousness

Those of us who are “oldies” will remember the Catechism question ‘Who made the world?’ ‘Our God made the world.’As kids we had our own answer which was “Two little pigs with their tails curled”. We didn’t give that answer to the teacher!! I think there was another question ‘When did God make the world?’ Answer: About 4000 years ago! I read recently that 1630 the then Archbishop of Armagh estimated that the world was created at about 6.30pm on October 22nd 4004BC.  A little off the mark since we know that the world began 5 billion years ago and that the universe is close to 14 billion years old. Sometimes when Ussher’s data is mentioned modern audiences tend to smile indulgently.
Tyhcho Brae (1546-1601) was among the last astronomers to observe the night sky without the aid of a telescope. In his calculations there were 817 or so stars in the firmament. We now know that there are 400 billion stars in the Milky Way and that there are at least one billion galaxies in the universe.
Finally, in the mid-19th century, everyone believed that each species was created by God and was immutable. It was the work of Charles Darwin (1809-1882) and, to a lesser extent, Alfred Russell Wallace (1823-1913) on evolution by natural selection, which turned biology upside down, especially after the publication of Darwin’s book ‘On the Origin of Species’ in 1859. Now we know that there is an extraordinary profusion of life on the earth and that it is all connected including us.
How wonderful and awe inspiring is God’s creation and we still don’t know the full story.

So maybe as Stephen Hawkin says ‘ We may soon be on a journey to a yet unknown galaxy. Mind blowing? Yes, raises the question ‘What is Creation’s final destiny.

Suggestion

It has been suggested that we have a parish day pilgrimage to Aylesford Shrine for the Year of Mercy. Any thoughts?
