First Reading (Zeph 3:14-18a). Confident that God has a better future in store for his oppressed people (on that day....) the prophet invites them now to lift their spirits and leave their fear behind.

Second Reading (Phil 4:4-7). Paul reminds his community that far from being a terrifying or alarming experience the coming of the Lord brings them joy, freedom from anxiety and divine peace.

Gospel (Lk 3:10-18). John the Baptist orientates the people on the ‘how’ of repentance. They must let their daily lives be guided by the highest values in order to receive into their hearts the power of the Spirit and the presence of Jesus ‘who is coming’.

General Notices

Advent Week 3 - A word from Archbishop Peter

Every year on December 8th the Church celebrates the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary. ‘I am the Immaculate Conception’ is how Our Lady described herself to Saint Bernadette, when she appeared to her in Lourdes. It is a great joy and blessing that Our Lady the Immaculate Conception is the principal patron of the Archdiocese of Southwark.

This year the Solemnity also marks the beginning of the Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy. The Holy Father will open the Holy Door at St Peter’s Basilica, and it ‘will become a Door of Mercy through which anyone who enters will experience the love of God who consoles, pardons and instils hope.’ This weekend in Cathedrals round the world, including our Cathedral of St George in Southwark, similar Doors of Mercy will be opened. We are invited during this Jubilee to make a pilgrimage in order to pass through a Door of Mercy; a journey of faith and reconciliation, with God and one another.

The wonder of God’s mercy should also be an inspiration to us; as we are grateful for the opportunity to receive His gift of mercy, so should we be lavish in being merciful, especially through reflecting on and practicing the corporal and spiritual works of mercy.

May this Extraordinary Jubilee be a time of blessing for you all.

Year of Mercy

Year of Mercy

What follows is paragraph two of Pope Francis’ letter announcing on the Year of Mercy.

We need constantly to contemplate the mystery of mercy. It is a wellspring of joy, serenity and peace. Our salvation depends on it. Mercy: the word reveals the very mystery of the Most Holy Trinity. Mercy: the ultimate and supreme act by which God comes to meet us. Mercy: the fundamental law that dwells in the heart of every person who looks sincerely into the eyes of his brothers and sisters on the path of life. Mercy: the bridge that connects God and man, opening our hearts to a hope of being loved forever despite our sinfulness.

At times we are called to gaze even more attentively on mercy so that we may become a more effective sign of the Father’s action in our lives. For this reason I have proclaimed an Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy as a special time for the Church; a time when the witness of believers might grow stronger and more effective.
