Sunday 6th December - Second Sunday of Advent b_20_20

First Reading (Baruch 5:1-9). God speaks to his exiled people in Babylon, offering words of hope for their return to their homeland and to God’s favour. God’s promise echoes the words in the New Testament that herald the ministry of John the Baptist.

Second Reading (Phil 1:3-6,8-11). Paul and Timothy give thanks for the faith of the Christians at Philippi, and pray that their love, knowledge and discernment will grow to maturity in preparation for the return of the Lord.

Gospel (Lk 3:1-6). John, the son of Zechariah, hears the call of the Lord and begins to proclaim a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. Thus the ministry of John the Baptist begins in fulfilment of the prophecy of Isaiah.

Advent Week 2

How am I doing? The Gospel last week said:, “Stay Awake?” To stay awake I must already be awake. Am I? If not I must awake NOW. Only then can I begin to prepare. PREPARE is our banner word this week! Prepare for HIS SECOND COMING for the celebration of HIS FIRT COMING in a few weeks time.

Maybe I could start to prepare by choosing to spend 5 minutes in silent prayer each day reflecting on a word of Scripture or the words of a favourite prayer. Or can I be more attentive, more caring to someone?

Year of Mercy

What follows is the open paragraph of Pope Francis’ letter announcing its beginning on Tuesday 8th December 2015.

Jesus Christ is the face of the Father’s mercy. These words might well sum up the mystery of the Christian faith. Mercy has become living and visible in Jesus of Nazareth, reaching its culmination in him. The Father, “rich in mercy” (Eph 2:4), after having revealed his name to Moses as “a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness” (Ex 34:6), has never ceased to show, in various ways throughout history, his divine nature. In the “fullness of time” (Gal4:4), when everything had been arranged according to his plan of salivation, he sent his only Son into the world, born of the Virgin Mary, to reveal his love for us in a definitive way. Whoever sees Jesus sees the Father (cf. Jn 14:9). Jesus of Nazareth, by his words, his actions, and his entire person reveals the mercy of God.

Attention All Readers

It has been brought to my attention that when I use my radio mike at the pulpit while the mike there is switched on, the sound is muffled, so now I will switch off the pulpit mike which means that the reader needs to switch it on again for the bidding prayers. As somebody who doesn’t always get it right at the pulpit, may I stress, that all readers need to be well acquainted with the scripture passages and the bidding prayers to ensure that the delivery is clear and properly paced. Please feel free to make me aware of my short comings in my delivery. Thank-you.
