MYANMAR has been in the news in recent days. Though far away, there is a connection with my home area. Fr. Owen O’Leary a Columban Missionary priest, now deceased, ministered there for a number of years until he and others Columbians were expelled. They then went to other part of the world to continue their missionary work. His brother Frank also a Columban died in Chile. While their neighbour Fr. John O’Connell died last year, working as a Columban in Peru. There are copies of an article from the FAR EAST magazine giving an insight into the past and present work of The Columbans in Myanmar. Please take a copy from the porch.

Following our Parish Faith and Culture day, we will re-group in the Presbytery on Wednesday November 25th at 8.00pm to review the occasion and see how as a parish we might develop and strengthen the spirit of evangelisation in this part of God’s world. Please continue to pray for the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Thank-you.

Year of Mercy

As you may already know, Pope Francis has announced a Year of Mercy, starting on December 8th this year ending on November 20th 2016, which is the feast of Christ the King. The Year of Mercy here in Bexley will be inaugurated at a Special Mass at St. Stephens, Welling, where all the priests of the Deanery will join Fr. Jim Spencer our Dean, in celebrating this mass. Parishioners from all parishes are invited and encouraged to participate in this mass. More information to follow.

The Cardinal Hume Centre

My sincere thanks to Bob Penny, for a donation of £100 (One hundred pounds), from the Club. Also a generous Donation from a Parishioner, which I am forwarding on to the Centre. Our Parish has been a supporter of the Centre for the past 20 years and may young lives have been transformed by your generosity. I know some parishioners are now making regular donations to the centre, through the ‘George Basil Hume Foundation’ which was set up in 2012. On the 25th Anniversary of the founding of the Centre by the late Cardinal Hume, to provide services for the young homeless people, he witnessed sleeping rough on the streets of London. The centre has gone from strength to strength since its foundation in extension of the original building with extra rooms, education facilities, social workers and many others. To maintain its services, the Centre is dependent on public funding. If you wish to make a donation (see details on the notice board), or give it to me and I will forward it on. Many thanks. MARY BASS (Phone: 01322 431492).
