Sunday 8th November b_20_20

First Reading (1 Kings 17:10-16). Guided by God, Elijah escaped drought and famine, as a stranger he begged for water and food in return for a promise of divine mercy.

Second Reading (Heb 9:24-28). Always we focus attention on God’s greatest gift; present among us, Jesus assures us that his obedience brings hope for his perpetual intercession.

Gospel (Mk 12:38-44). Do some leaders and teachers in society twist their role into self-service? Such people are condemned by Jesus, who points out the extraordinary generosity of a poor widow as an example of placing all we have at the service of God.

November - Month of the Holy Souls

There are white envelopes marked Holy Souls available in the porch. Parishioners are invited to take one and put in them the names of deceased loved ones and return them. They will be placed on the altar at all masses during November. Please do not put any money in the envelope. If you wish to have mass offered, please use the brown mass offering envelopes also available in the porch or see Fr. John.

Memorial Service for Deceased Loved Ones, Catholic or Non Catholic: As per last week’s newsletter the Memorial Service will be at 15.00 on Sunday 22nd November in our Church. Mulligan’s Funeral Service will write on our behalf to the next of kin of those whose funerals they arranged with Fr. John either here at St. Thomas More or in a Crematorium. However, anybody who wishes to remember a loved one wherever that person died is welcome to come to the service which will be arranged and conducted by Fr. John. There will be light refreshments in the Hall afterwards and the bar will be open.

Foggy Weather

Recently our weather has been Foggy. Life itself can at times be grey and foggy, but as the Poet Edward Robeson Taylor reminds us, it is not the whole story.

The fog rolls in as it has rolled for years that never can be told, and all the sky of sombre-gray makes drearier still the dreary-day; and hearts still ache until they break, as it has been with Death alway.

But though the fog be deeper rolled, the sun’s above it as of old; no sky can be so sombre-gray, but that the blue will have its way; and hearts will wake for love’s dear sake, as it has been with Life alway.
