First Reading (Gen 2:18-24): Adam not merely recognizes that there is a physical connection with Eve, ‘at last... flesh from my flesh’. He is also declaring Eve to be his wife, his kin. Adam forms a covenant with Eve, establishing her as his wife: ‘they become one body’ – the first marriage and the model for all subsequent marriage.

Second Reading (Heb 2:9-11): While biological children are a blessing in the natural order, spiritual children are a blessing in the supernatural order. Jesus ‘brings a great many of his children into glory’: and this refers to the Church, to those who are born anew in Christ through Baptism. We are the children of Christ’s self-offering.

Gospel (Mk 10:2-16): Jesus indicates some criteria of the kingdom in regard to basic human situations and relationships: marriage and children. He reminds the Pharisees that within the Torah itself, there is a hierarchy of principles for the moral behaviour, and the highest are those entailed by the description of humanity in its ‘pre-fall’ state (Gen 1-2). In other words, Genesis describes God’s ideals for human existence.

It is not accidental that Jesus’ discussion of marriage is followed by his teaching about children (all the more reason to use the full version of the gospel reading today).

Sunday 4th October Responsorial Psalm: May the Lord bless us all the days of our life.

Parish Faith and Culture Day
Sunday 4th October 2015

The day has arrived. Our Day as together in Christ we celebrate Our Faith and Cultures. They are not separate realities, they so to speak intermingle.   Our faith sheds the purifying light of Christ into our cultures enabling them in their turn to give expression to the richness and the all embracing nature of God’s love for all His people. SO LET US CELEBRATE.

Autumn Family Fast Day

Next weekend at Sunday mass a speaker from CAFOD will share with us some thoughts about the way in which we can as a parish bring hope and help to some of the poorest people in different parts of the world. The CAFOD envelopes will be handed out, after all masses. Please put into the envelopes any money you save by eating/drinking less on Friday and return the envelope the following Sunday. Thank you.

Sadly Michael Sullivan because of his illness cannot be with us.

Get Thee to the Nunnery

A former girlfriend of Prime Minister David Cameron gave up partygoing to become a nun, according to a controversial new biography by Tory donor Lord Ashcroft. Laura Adshead dated the PM in the 1990s while at Conservative Central Office. When the relationship ended she took compassionate leave, later moving the US. Sister John Mary, now in her 40s, lives at the Abbey of Regina Laudis, in Connecticut, also home to former Hollywood actress Dolores Hart.

Sunday Mass Readers

Please, please collect your Scripture guide from the Sacristy, which covers Sundays from October to December. This pamphlet is very important as it gives a resume of the passages to be read which will enable readers to get an understanding of the text. This helps the reader to proclaim the message more confidently and with conviction.
