Sunday 6th September b_20_20

First Reading (Is 35:4-7a). The prophet provides a message of hope for the exiles. He singles out four groups of people who will especially benefit from God’s saving action: the blind, the deaf, the lame, and the speech impaired.

Second Reading (Jas 2:1-5). The author discusses the issue of discrimination. He urges his audience to favour the poor rather than the rich since God has chosen to make the poor rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom.

Gospel (Mk 7:31-37). Mark narrates the story of Jesus’ cure of a deaf and speech-impaired man in order to emphasize Jesus’ concern for the Gentiles. Though once deaf and speech-impaired, the Gentiles are now able to hear God’s message through Jesus’ ministry of compassion.

Mercy

Mercy is a work which springs from the goodness of God,  and it will continue to work until sin is no longer allowed to trouble faithful souls. When sin no longer has licence to pursue, then the work of mercy will cease. Then shall every soul be gathered into goodness and rest there forever. Under his  watchfulness we fall; by his blessed love and strength and wisdom we are defended; and through mercy and through grace we are lifted up to many joys.
