First Reading (Jos 24:1-2, 15-18). In this reading we recall that faith in God is not just ‘ going with the flow’, something that we just happen to do because we have always done it. Faith is the decision to enter a relationship, a covenant, with God. And this relationship involves recalling his goodness, living according to his law, and offering him praise.

Second Reading (Eph 5:21-32). Understanding who we are as ‘the church’ is far more difficult than saying we follow a common teaching or are members of a club: we are the body of Christ. And to try and tease this out, the author of the letter to the Ephesians borrowed from his experience of marriage to explain the relationship of Jesus and the church. We may find his views of marriage are very different to our own, but we have to see through them to try and grasp what he is saying about his real subject:  who are we as ‘the church’.

Gospel (Jn 6:6-69). When some disciples heard Jesus claiming that he was the Bread come down from heaven – in other words he was the Father’s gift which would give eternal life to those who accepted him – they could not accept this. They imagined that God’s ultimate gift to humanity had to be something more spectacular than the man, Jesus, they saw before them. Faced with those who would not accept his words, Jesus put this challenge to the whole group.

Memory walk at the tower of london
An Appeal

My name is Matthew Pereira, I am a 6th form Student at Beths Grammar School and I am participating in the Memory Walk at the Tower of London on the 5th of September, to help raise some funds for the Alzeimer’s Society, to do research into dementia and the advancement of care provided to its sufferers; a very close relative of my family is affected by it and I am giving my support by taking part in the walk.

Therefore, I would appreciate if possible, if you could support this cause, by giving donations by signing up the form below ( in porch) or going to the website called justgiving and going to my page Matt Pereira, where your donations will go directly to Alzheimer’s Society.

The Open Window - By Joyce Rupp

Inside each of us there awaits a wonder full spirit of freedom.

She waits to dance in the rooms of our heart that are closed dark and cluttered.

She waits to dance in the spaces where negative feelings have built barricades and stock-piled weapons.
She waits to dance in the corners where we still do not believe in our goodness. Inside each of us there awaits a wonder full spirit of freedom.

She will life light feet and make glad songs within us on the day we open the door of ego to let our enemies stomp out.
