Sunday 1st March - second Sunday of Lent year_b

First Reading (Genisis 22:1-2. 9-13.15-18). Abraham’s faith is tested in offering his son Isaac.

Second Reading (Roman 8:31-34). Our hope is unshakeable because God has given us his son.

Gospel (Mark 9:2-10).  The transfigured Jesus is the Son of God

Sunday 15th February: Responsorial Psalm:  I will walk in the presence of the Lord in the land of the living.

  • Who you are: If you become who you are, you will set the whole world on fire. St Catherine of Siena
  • Freedom: We value it but what is it? Freedom consists in not doing what we like, but in having the right to do what we ought. Pope John Paul II.
  • Ciara Penny RIP: May she rest in peace. Her requiem mass will be celebrated here at St Thomas More on Friday 13th March at 13.00, Burial at Plumstead cemetery at 14.30. Many of our parishioners, especially parents whose children went to St Thomas More school, would have known Ciara very well. Please pray for her, her husband Ian and their 3 children, Sian, Liam and Declan.
  • Sale of Church: I recently received a written enquiry regarding the possible sale of our church. How should I respond?
  • Are we a welcoming Parish?: A question that was raised at the Parish Council meeting on Thursday. We felt we are a welcoming parish  evidenced by our parishioners who are our welcomers at all masses on Sunday. This is an invaluable ministry and sincere thanks to those involved. As an upshot of our discussions, Fr John would be delighted to post in the porch the word WELCOME in the language of parishioners from different nationalities and cultures. Please feel free to devise your own ‘poster’ bearing in mind that the display space in the porch is limited. Thank you and welcome.

Pope Francis

Pope Francis in paragraph 3 of his letter The Joy of the Gospel, writes ‘I invite all Christians, everywhere, at this very moment, to a renewed personal encounter with Jesus Christ, or at least an openness to letting him encounter them; I ask all of you to do this unfailingly each day. No one should think that this invitation is not meant for him or her, since ‘no one is excluded from the joy brought by the Lord.’ The Lord does not disappoint those who take this risk; whenever we take a step towards Jesus, we come to realize that he is already here waiting for us with open arms. Now is the time to say to Jesus, ‘Lord, I have let myself be deceived; in a thousand ways, I have shunned your love, yet here I am once more, to renew my covenant with you. I need you. Save me once again, Lord, take me once more into your redeeming embrace.’ How good it feels to come back to him whenever we are lost! Let me say this once more; God never tires of forgiving us; we are the ones who tire of seeking his mercy.

Q. How and where do we encounter Him?
A. a) Personal prayer
b) The mass
c) The Scriptures
d) In each other
e) In truly desiring to meet Him. We can bump
into Him anywhere, anytime, in unexpected ways.

May General Election

The following is not a political broadcast for any party. It is to say that the Bishops of England and Wales have sent  parishioners copies of their letter on the election. They state clearly ‘whom you vote of is a matter for you alone’. However, in the process of deciding to vote they suggest we consider certain issues which they list and that we challenge the candidates on them. They also encourage us to pray for wisdom. They leave us with the following question, ‘How in the light of the GOSPEL, can my vote best serve the common good? Copies are available in the porch. Please take one. It is free and read it.

Be encouraged to vote

Huge numbers didn’t vote in the last general election. In 2010, The Conservative Party received the highest number of votes – just under 11 million. But twice this number – 22 million – didn’t vote at all.
Three important groups were less likely to vote; the young, people with the lowest income, and those from ethnic minorities.
Many felt ignored by politicians – and with good reason. People aged 18-21 are almost three times more likely to be low paid than any other age group.
But by not voting they give politicians even more of an excuse to ignore them. And if those reluctant voters do make it to the ballot box, they may have more power than they think. Some MPs’ majorities are surprisingly vulnerable.

Please encourage everyone to register to vote, this can be done at https://www.gov.uk/register-to-vote either on line or by downloading a form – and then get them to Vote!
