Sunday 22nd February - First Sunday of Lent b_20_20

First Reading (Gen. 9:8-15). After the great flood, God blesses Noah and his people, makes them again lords of the earth and re-establishes a covenant whose sign is the rainbow.

Second Reading (1 Pet. 3:18-22).  We are saved by baptism which demands a change of heart.

Gospel (Mark 1:12-15). The God-Man was truly tempted before beginning to preach salvation.

Sunday 22nd February: Responsorial Psalm:  Yours ways, Lord, are faithfulness and love for those who keep your covenant.

  • Michael Francis Kilgannon RIP: Funeral mass of MICHAEL FRANCIS KILGANNON will take place on 3rd March 2015 at 11.30, at St Thomas More Church, followed by the committal at Hillview cemetery, Plumstead at 13.00.
  • A chair needs a home: Niagra Therapeutic Chair Recliner is good condition needs a home – would need to be collected. Please contact Anne Pike on 0208 306 9109.
  • First Sunday of Lent: Here we are again. Lent is a season of spiritual growth linked as it is to growth in nature. As we know certain things have to be done to promote and assist growth in flower gardens so also with spiritual growth. There are three traditional ways of promoting it: PRAYER – time spent with Jesus. FASTING – denying ourselves in some way that might become less attached to  things including food and drinks. ALMS GIVING – Paying attention to others and helping in any way we can. Three down to earth ways of moving closer to Jesus.
  • Wings not needed: We need no wings to go in search of God, but have only to find a place where we can be along and look upon Him present within us. St Teresa of Avila.

Reverence at Mass

Is there a ‘slippage’?
At times it seems there is. What should be our guidelines while in the sacred space of the Church: To help us all, I suggest the following:

  1. Before Mass – speak to God
  2. During Mass let God speak to you
  3. After Mass quietly speak to you neighbour
Fr. John

Our Patron Saint

St Thomas More is our Patron Saint. You may have watched Wolfe Halls on TV the BBC dramatisation of Hilary Mantel’s book which has been described as a brilliant re-imagination of the Court of Henry VIII. Thomas More is presented in rather a DARK colour, but there is another story to be told. Eamon Duffy who is a Professor of the history of Christianity at Cambridge University in a recent article in the Tablet gives a rather different picture of Thomas More. If you wish to have a copy of the article speak to Fr John.

Further Thoughts for Lent

Every Lent, we ought to be looking at the various ways in which we get involved in manufacturing the gods that suit us. Every Lent is a time to get that little bit further beyond the idolatry, that constantly keeps us prisoner and draws us back to the old world. Rowan Williams – Retired Archbishop of Canterbury

Ezekiel

You have said: ‘Our transgressions and our sins weight upon us, and we waste away because of them; how then can we live? Say to them, As I love, says the lord God, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but that the wicked turn from them ways and live; turn back, turn back from your evil ways. Ezekiel 33:10-11
