Sunday 11th - The Baptism of the lord b_20_20

04012015

First Reading (1 Sam 3:3-10.19). When John baptised Jesus in the Jordan, Jesus emerged on to the public stage and was anointed with the Spirit for his public ministry.  This prophecy spoken and written hundreds of years earlier, had its full meaning revealed with the coming of Christ.

Second Reading(1 Jn 5:1-9). This quiet, reflective text, about love  of God expressed by keeping his commandment, deserves to be read slowly.  Mention of the water and the blood (which flowed from the pierced side of the crucified Christ) reminds us of Calvary, while mention  of the Spirit brings to mind both the resurrection and Pentecost.

Gospel (Mark 1:7-11: You are my Son, the Beloved;  my favour rests on you.

Sunday 4th: Responsorial Psalm 7l:  All nations shall fall prostrate before you, O Lord

  • Guide for Readers: Available for you in the Sacristy.  See overleaf
  • Thanks from Fr. Reynolds: Fr. Reynolds would like to thank all parishioners and friends who sent him Christmas Greetings and gifts.  He will never forget you, and remembers you in his prayers.  He wishes you all ‘ Peace and Happiness’ in the year 2015.

General Notices

2015

The New Year is here.  We welcome it.  It is likely to be busy, to avoid it being too busy which is bad, here is a little Tip:  If we are rushed for time sow time and we will reap time. Go to the Church or to your room and spend some time in quiet prayer. You will have more time than ever and you work will get done.

APUC Annual White Flower Appeal
10th - 11th January 2015

04012015_1The Society for the protection of unborn children (SPUC) will be holding its annual White Flower Appeal next weekend.  In common with the Catholic Church SPUC defends and upholds the sanctity of life from conception to natural death. In November two pro-life midwives went to the supreme court in London to defend their right to refuse to be involved in abortions.  On the 17th of December the supreme court issued a Ruling rejecting the case of the two midwives and in doing so severely restricted the legal protection of the right of conscientious objection.  SPUS has over the past three years helped to fund the legal costs incurred by the two midwives and will continue to use its funds in the defence of human life in all its stages. Please give generously to this worthy cause.  The collection will be held after all masses next weekend.

Octave of Prayer for Christian Unity

This is a period of light days of Prayer that all Christians may be one according to the prayer of Jesus “that all may be one.”. As usual we will be joining in prayer with our fellow Christians at St. Andrews and the Pantiles Methodist Church.  More information later.

Sunday Mass Readers Guide

Copies are now available in the Sacristy.  May I emphasise that it is essential that all members of The Word collect and use the guide.  Hopefully this will enable all ministers to have a better understanding of the text to be read or rather Proclaimed for what it is.  The Word of the Lord. A minister should never come “cold” to the Scripture passage or indeed to the Bidding Prayers.  If any minister of The Word does not have a Sunday Missile with the current scriptures please speak to Fr. John.  Finally thank you for your ministry.

REMEMBER Jesus IS THE REASON FOR THE SEASON.
